The Willy Wonka Experience AI Disaster

The Bad AI Egg

However, while AI undoubtedly has its place in marketing, it is not a cure-all. As the Willy Wonka Experience in Glasgow demonstrated, relying solely on AI generated led to a lack of authenticity. It ultimately undermined the success of marketing efforts, damaging the brand’s reputation.

Tarnished Golden Tickets

The Willy Wonka Experience, organised by the House of Illuminati, was marketed as an “immersive experience” inspired by the beloved Wonka films, and was an event marketed for families and children. The organisers utilised AI-generated descriptions and imagery, and the event promised attendees a fantastical journey complete with giant mushrooms, candy canes, and chocolate fountains, all accompanied by special audio and visual effects narrated by dancing Oompa-Loompas and Willy Wonka. However, customers who had paid up to £35 for a ticket arrived at the industrial park venue in Glasgow to find a starkly different reality. Instead of the promised wonderland, they were met with a sparsely decorated warehouse containing only a few plastic props, a small bouncy castle, and some makeshift backdrops, a far cry from the immersive experience advertised.

The disappointment among attendees was palpable, with the first set of customers demanding refunds upon arrival for the morning slot. Stuart Sinclair, who attended with his family, described the event as “that bad, it was funny,”. Furthermore, one of the actors who played Willy Wonka, Paul Connell, remarked that even his script appeared to be made up “pretty much of AI-generated gibberish.”

Consequently, organisers were forced to cancel the event midway through. However, they failed to notify later arrivals, leaving some who had travelled considerable distances unaware of the cancellation. As a result, these attendees are now seeking reimbursement for their travel expenses, adding to the event’s fallout. Michael Archibald, who played one of the Willy Wonkas, said that people “started rioting” and the chaotic situation, with parents describing the event as “awful” and recounting how it left children in tears of disappointment prompted police intervention.

Here Comes The Oompa-Loompas!

Organisers of the event have issued a formal apology for the debacle that left children in tears and families outraged. Billy Coull, Director of the House of Illuminati, expressed deep disappointment over the event’s failure to live up to expectations.

Acknowledging the mishap, a spokesperson for the House of Illuminati expressed remorse for the distress caused, describing the day as “very stressful and frustrating” for many. They admitted to last-minute setbacks and conceded that the event should have been cancelled earlier. The organisers pledged to issue full refunds to all ticket holders and expressed regret over the event’s failure to materialise as planned.

The fallout from this incident has tarnished the brand’s identity. Customers are now likely to approach future events with caution, if not outright scepticism, and may even choose to boycott House of Illuminati events altogether.

The Importance of Authenticity

This situation highlights why businesses must approach AI in marketing cautiously and carefully. While AI can provide valuable insights and automate specific tasks, using it to create content can cause problems and needs to be carefully managed.

AI algorithms often rely on large datasets to generate content, which may inadvertently perpetuate biases or produce generic, cookie-cutter material. Without human oversight and intervention, AI-generated content risks sounding robotic, insincere, or disconnected from the brand’s identity.

In our first ‘Get To Know…’, our Head of Social Media Lorenzo Brach explains what his role involves and what a typical day looks like for him.

My job has a wonderful mix of both analytics and creativity. I oversee all paid and organic social media activity for our clients and have the privilege of managing a fantastic team.

Without sounding clichéd, no two days are the same given the diversity of our clients and the industries they work in. In the morning I could be in a meeting discussing a garden product promotion and an hour later reviewing a campaign designed to drive sales enquiries for a development of apartments in London. The key is to stay innovative while following best practices, ensuring that client objectives are always adhered to.

A typical morning usually starts with reviewing budgets, replying to emails and huddling with the team. It’s important to stay updated so both myself and the team always make time to browse through blogs and articles to keep abreast of industry news and trends.
As part of the Fingo performance team, my key responsibilities are focused around our client’s organic and paid social campaigns but as well as managing my team you’ll often find me with the search, technical and creative teams looking for something that will give a social media campaign a competitive edge.

We have a breadth and depth of creative, user experience and technical expertise here at Fingo and wherever possible we bring those teams together to ensure we get the most out of our campaigns. Only yesterday I was discussing with the various teams how we could use an existing piece of video content and edit it down for a particular campaign – something we often do in-house.

We have a number of successful partnership arrangements with other digital agencies that require daily catch ups with their account teams. Both our account teams work together to maximise the performance of their campaigns which provides our partners unlimited access to the specialist knowledge our social media experts have.
The prominence of Social Media and its impact on businesses and their marketing has been evident by the rapid demand for this service at our Agency. At the moment the team is realising some fantastic results for our clients through our hard work, innovation and dedication.

The valuable work our team do for our clients only tells part of the story of how our staff spend their time. As a whole, Fingo strive for an altruistic approach to non-work related activities. From one-off events such as a 300 mile bike ride to Paris to ongoing commitments such as volunteering at Epsom’s Riding for the Disabled, we are all encouraged to take part in charitable pursuits which is then wholeheartedly supported by our peers.

These charitable efforts come from a belief that everyone benefits from doing something for others. Philanthropy offers many positives to a company culture such as promoting a closer bond between teams, as well as providing a greater sense of fulfilment for employees. Adopting such strong values based around giving back to others has enabled Fingo to continually evaluate what we can do for communities and organisations… plus we love a good opportunity to legitimately eat cake!!

In September last year, our Managing Director Peter Woollven and several colleagues from a partner agency undertook a charity bike ride from London to Paris. Raising money for Miracles, a charity supporting children and families in poverty. The cyclists braved the weather and drivers to complete the journey in three days, culminating in a celebratory glass (plastic cup) of champagne. When in ~~Rome~~ Paris.

‘We were delighted to be able to take on the challenge for Miracles and it’s safe to say we’d all recommend taking on the challenge, it was a great trip for a worthy cause.’

Shortly after this, Sophie Foley ventured to Kefalonia, Greece. Her time there was spent working with the research and conservation project Wildlife Sense, whose aim is to protect, conserve and educate people on the plight of the endangered Loggerheard sea turtles.

‘One of the best feelings was watching the hatchlings make it to the sea and swim off. You feel a huge amount of responsibility and privilege of their incredible journey.’ Sophie said that her time with Wildlife Sense was ‘amazing’, citing a now ‘even greater respect for all conservation workers.’

Charity work is not limited to individuals, however. As recently as December, our agency took part in Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children. December also saw the culmination of our annual baking event: the Great Fingo Bake-off which was eventually won by Sophie. The money raised was donated between a local hospice and Sunnybank Trust, an Epsom-based charity dedicated to helping adults with learning difficulties.

Our partnership with Sunnybank dates back to our early days in 2010. One of our first clients introduced Fingo to the charity and since then, one of our directors has acted as a trustee. Being Epsom-based, there have been a number of opportunities for working closely with each other. One year saw the individuals from Sunnybank judge the Fingo Bake-off final round.

2019 is promising to be an even bigger year. In the next few weeks one of our directors is off to help at a community education project in India helping under-privileged children in Udaipur through one of our clients, POD Volunteer.

We offer our help to charities and organisations when we can and we look forward to doing much more of this throughout the year.
